Family Is Everything- A Birth Story
I first met this beautiful family before they were “even a family” as I was one of their veterinary care team professionals who took care of their beloved dog.
I shared in their excitement as they got married, and each time they were bringing new life into the world (also, she is legit the cutest pregnant mama - I loved every one of her baby bumps!).
So when it came down to it, I was super excited to be part of their birth team for their 4th baby and tell their birth story.
When I arrived at the house, it was so peaceful yet FULL of happiness and excitement. Mama was in the throes of her labour and focusing hard. Dad was working quickly to fill the birthing tub to give her some relief during her contractions. She may have been the most peaceful, quiet labour-er I have ever encountered. I don’t think she made a single peep until he arrived! I watched, and photographed, in awe and pride as her incredible doula and midwife gave her unwaivering support through each contraction. The pure energy was palpable.
The three big siblings were all awake, excited and ready to meet their new little brother. What I often see with home births, is that children are not afraid. They don’t have the same reaction that adults can have when faced with all the facets of birth. In fact, it’s usually the opposite. They’re SO interested in EVERY aspect of it….no matter how “graphic”. These three were no exception, and I LOVED listening to big sister talk all about the process of birth and expectations after birth with correct medical terminology! It was so adorable. They were all eager to get some hands on time with their new baby….and of course, they all were also making sure their mom new how much they loved and cared for her. Even listening to the oldest brother talk to his grandpa about how “proud and amazing my mom is” - how amazing to hear a child, so young, recognize the amazing strength of a person bringing a baby into this world. (Seriously, tears brimmed my eyes as I heard him saying this!)
Birth is one of those life events that is so different for every single one, sure we can prepare ourselves as best as we can, but truly, we never know how it will play out. And I live for it every single time!
